A Worthy Witness

Read  1 Thessalonians 1:1 through 5:28

The common phrase, “Some people are so heavenly-minded they are no earthly good,” was coined in the 1800s by physician Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., referring to the inaction of some Christians on social issues. This phrase may describe some of the Thessalonians who—believing the return of Christ was imminent— had abandoned their professions and were not able to contribute financially or willing to lend a hand.

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody (1 Thessalonians 4:11–12).

It is easy for believers today to have similar attitudes. While Christians should always be prepared for Jesus’ return, daily living should not be ignored. Indeed, daily living gives Christians an opportunity to model God-centered behavior to an unsaved world.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Lord, help me to reach out to unbelievers.
