A Just Leader

Read 2 Samuel 8:1 through 11:27

“David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.” (2 Samuel 8:15)

As David began to reign, it became immediately clear what the Lord had seen in him when he was a young shepherd. Beyond his capability as a military commander, David led the nation with justice. As a shepherd, he cared for his sheep. As a king, David cared for the people of God.

When he became a threat to King Saul, David was hunted and would have been killed. By contrast David found Mephibosheth, a member of Saul’s family and a potential successor to the throne, for the purpose of showing kindness and compassion. It was expected that kings would exert power of force and intimidation. Instead, David led with justice and care. Truly, he ruled as an extension of Israel’s true King, the Lord.

David’s life contained flaws, but he continues to provide a model of godly leadership. Every Christian is a leader, whether he or she leads a family, church, small group, or company. Lead with strength, but put the Lord and the people first.
