Read Isaiah 13:1 through 23:18
Isaiah contrasted two key individuals in chapter 22. Shebna, the current palace administrator, was in charge of all of King Hezekiah’s wealth and ran his entire palace. God condemned Shebna, however, not simply because he was building a tomb but because of his motives. Shebna was focused on himself and his own legacy, not on the needs of the people or the will of God.
So God planned to replace Shebna with Eliakim, who would share the fatherly heart of God.
“I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah” (Isaiah 22:21).
The legacy of parents isn’t their tombs, but their children. Eliakim’s heart was for others. He would exercise the authority of God in opening and shutting doors. Eliakim’s service would bring honor to his family by serving the people of God.
God is looking to raise up parents in the church who will lead others selflessly and leave a legacy of honor.
