Read Isaiah 58:1 through 66:24
The Messiah’s mission is proclaimed in Isaiah 61. Jesus quoted these words in Luke 4:18–19.
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners (Isaiah 61:1).
These verses explain the motive of God’s Spirit in resting on the Messiah. The Spirit was on Him because He was anointed to preach the gospel to the poor, heal those with broken hearts, and bring freedom to prisoners.
The church is entrusted with carrying on the mission of Jesus. The Spirit that anointed Him to do those things is available to His people as well. When we choose to align ourselves with the mission of the Messiah, the Spirit who rested on the Messiah will also rest on us.
God is concerned about the poor, the heartbroken, and the prisoners. When we step out to minister to them, God’s Spirit will empower us as He empowered Jesus.
