Read Mark 14:1 through 16:20
God’s covenant with Israel involved the sacrifice of animals. Each sacrifice applied only to the person offering the sacrifice and only for the specific sin(s) for which the sacrifice was made. However, as Jesus celebrated His last meal with His disciples, He pointed to a new and greater covenant, sealed with His own blood, that provided forgiveness for all who would receive it.
“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them (Mark 14:24).
The Lord’s Supper points back to this observance of the Passover that Jesus had with these disciples. He explained that the bread represented His body, which would soon offer healing, and the wine represented His blood, which provided the eternal sacrifice for humanity.
Remembering this sacrifice helps believers trust God since they know His love for them is so great He allowed His own Son to purchase salvation for all who accept His great gift.
Thought for Today:
Christ’s blood paid the price for the sins of all who will believe.
