Read Judges 9:1 through 10:18
News headlines regularly highlight the financial resources and influence of ungodly people. The local newspaper, evening news, and online news sites are full of examples of money being spent or the influence enjoyed by things such as a blockbuster movie that promotes evil choices or a political group that supports government officials whose policies do not honor God.
They gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels, who became his followers (Judges 9:4).
The Book of Judges includes many passages describing the short-term triumph of evil. There were times in Israel’s history when evil appeared to have the upper hand.
Abimelek had money and power available to eliminate his rivals and bully people into submission. But he eventually faced God’s judgment. His life is one more lesson to believers that God is our refuge in times of evil and He can be trusted.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: When evil appears to triumph, keep your faith intact.
