Read Deuteronomy 29:1 through 30:20; Mark 12:35 through 13:11
In 1946, a widowed mother and her three teen daughters felt challenged to give in a “sacrificial” offering for a poor family. That month the woman and her daughters ate only potatoes, turned off lights to save electricity, cleaned homes, did babysitting, and scraped together seventy dollars, which they joyfully gave in the offering.
They were shocked when the pastor gave them the entire offering—eighty-seven dollars. They went home depressed. The next Sunday a guest missionary spoke. He said that one hundred dollars could put a roof on a church. The family gave the entire eighty-seven dollars.
When the missionary received the one-hundred-dollar offering, he said, “You must have a rich family in your church.” The widow and her girls again felt rich.
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43–44).
Do not be afraid to give whatever God may ask. His storehouse is bigger than yours.
Prayer for Today:
Lord, may I be truly generous.
