Read Psalms 55:1–23; 58:1–11
Have you every wanted to run; to drop everything and make a break for a quiet place, or a safe place, or anyplace for that matter? You’re not alone. What a comfort it is to find one of the greatest heroes of the Bible expressing that same common desire to escape. King David was walled in by his troubles. He was looking for a miraculous escape:
“Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6).
When we can get away and rest, we should. If we fail to take the restful opportunities that God does provide, we will soon fail. But what do we do when we cannot run—when we can only wish we could run? We serve a God who hears us cry out in the middle of the storm. He will come alongside, even when the flood threatens or the adversaries attack. Remember, David found God to be an “ever-present” help in time of trouble (see Psalm 46:1,2). If you can’t fly away from your circumstances, find God’s strength in the middle of them. And don’t forget that others are needing the same relief that you need; there is power in praying together!
CHALLENGE FOR TODAY:
Stop looking for a way out of your trouble and start looking for God in the middle of it.
