Read 1 Kings 2:1 through 3:28
What is the most important legacy a parent could pass on to his or her child? Would it be the houses, lands, and full bank accounts that a mother or father worked to provide? Would it be a broad education and wisdom? Would it even be a successful business or ministry for those children to continue?
King David, one of the wealthiest, most famous kings of all time, had a different idea. As he lay dying, he counseled his son, Solomon.
“And observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses” (1 Kings 2:3).
David came from the simple life of a shepherd boy. He became the great king of Israel and the ancestor of our Savior. He learned valuable lessons about warfare and politics. He was a gifted musician and writer. Yet the most important gift he wanted to give his son was the desire to serve and obey God.
