Peace and Happiness

Read John 14:1 through 16:33

Peace and happiness. Sometimes people confuse the two. In today’s culture, “peace” seems to be dependent upon happiness. What kind of peace (or happiness) does the world offer? Job security, financial security, and relational security are all viewed as paths to peace. However, all of these could collapse, resulting in financial and relational ruin – not peace. Fun, pleasure, and entertainment also offer happiness. But what happens to people’s peace when hardships, pain, and suffering strike? As Jesus departed this earth, He encouraged his disciples:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

Jesus offers a different kind of peace. God’s peace remains despite unemployment, financial loss, and failed relationships. God’s peace is not dependent upon happiness. It is an everlasting peace, a peace that withstands the pressures of life. Knowing Jesus enables a believer to experience peace – even when facing adversity.

Prayer for Today: Jesus, I receive your peace in the midst of my pain.
