God’s Victory

Read Numbers 28:1 through 31:54

When God called for a census of Israel’s fighting men in Numbers 26, the total was just over six hundred thousand soldiers. When God commanded Moses to attack the Midianites in Numbers 31, He told Moses to only send twelve thousand of these men into battle. Yet the Israelites won a great victory. The list of their spoils gives an idea of just how large a force they defeated. As the narrative of the Midianite campaign ends, the soldiers shared an incredible discovery with Moses.

“Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing” (Numbers 31:49).

Obviously, Israel’s success on the battlefield was not tied to the number of their fighting men, but on their commitment to God. Generations later Gideon would defeat an enormous force of Midianites with just three hundred men.

You will find the same truth at work in your life. God will enable you to carry out His will based on His resources, not yours. You may feel overwhelmed by the task God has given you or intimidated by those who would criticize or attack you. Don’t worry. The same God who gave victory to Israel is with you.

Challenge for Today: Don’t make the mistake of trusting in your own ability when facing the challenges of life.
