Read Numbers 31:1 through 33:56
“Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community” (Numbers 31:27).
After 40 years of wandering in the desert, Israel began conquering the land that God had promised. Taking the land wasn’t without cost or sacrifice, but God did provide for the needs of His people.
As Israel conquered a nation, the spoils of war were divided among the people. In this particular battle with the Midianites, the plunder was truly astounding—nearly 750,000 sheep and cattle, hundreds of pounds of gold, and even women. The concept of dividing the spoils of war is foreign to us today. But for the nation of Israel, it was God’s method to supply the needed land and provisions for advancing His chosen people.
God no longer has us conquer our neighbors and divide their possessions, but He still provides for our needs today. Nothing is too difficult for Him, and no need is too great.
PRAYER SUGGESTION: Make a list of the ways God has met your needs during the past 12 months and say a prayer of thanksgiving, recognizing God’s blessing in your life.
