Read 1 Chronicles 24:1 through 26:32
God identified David as a man after the Lord’s own heart. David deeply valued worship. As a musician himself, David understood the power of music to touch human emotions, intimately connecting the people with their God. So, the king personally supervised the official integration of music into temple worship.
All these men were under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God (1 Chronicles 25:6).
The temple musicians demonstrated particular skill, whether it be vocal expression (prophecy) or with an instrument. Each person was uniquely skilled. And each musician subjected his skill to training, continuously improving it. The king, along with military leaders, initiated temple music. No doubt, they saw a correlation of the nation’s spiritual health to its overall strength.
Christian worship today differs from the worship of ancient Israel. But David’ guiding principles of skill, training, and spiritual health remain.
