Not So Random

Read 2 Samuel 8:15 through 10:19

“Is there no one still left of the house of Saul whom I can show God’s kindness?” (2 Samuel 9:3)

Most of us can agree that showing random acts of kindness is a good idea. But have you ever considered that it might also be a “God” idea? This verse indicates that when King David thought of showing kindness to the house of Saul, he acknowledged that the kindness originated in God. It was God’s kindness.

The concept that God is the wellspring of life, the source from which all that is true and good flows, should be a great relief to us, His followers. It means that we do not have to rely on ourselves to generate kindness, love, or patience. Rather, we are to be channels through which God’s life touches the world.

So, if we don’t feel very accepting or gentle toward a person, we can, and should, ask the Lord to love him or her through us. We can pray, “Father, I admit that I do not feel any love for ____, but I also know that You do. Please let Your love flow through me today.”

Remember, a random act of kindness really isn’t random at all. It originates in the heart of the One who is Love.

Thought for Today:

God expresses His good intentions toward others, through us, His servants.
