Conditioned to Fear

Read Psalms 45:1 through 47:9

Tillie, a little brown-and-white dog is terrified of thunder. A series of storms rattled the windowpanes. Sunday through Saturday, it was the same every day. After a week of this, Tillie expected thunder every time it rained.

The following Monday a light shower pattered gently against the windowpanes. Trembling, Tillie huddled close to her master, certain the thunder would follow. She leaned against his leg or lay at his feet. Her master was her refuge.

Most humans have been conditioned to fear something, as well. Childhood experiences have burned deep scars into many hearts. They may be burned so deeply no one remembers how or when the fears first started.

Once in a while, everyone needs someone strong to protect him or her from the storms of life—someone mightier than another human being. They need to lean on the Heavenly Master.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

CHALLENGE FOR TODAY: Memorize this verse. Lean on God’s truth during your thunderstorms.
